On Hiatus until February

I waited until after Chicago to tell you this, assuming that some people would have already forgotten about me by now, anyway. But, this being a very busy time, and my dissertation draft being due in late January, I have no choice. I'll come back in February.

In the mean time, I will do some lurking/reading and even a bit of commenting. It will be a tough habit to break.

Conference Surreal

So when I got there I found out that my paper was at an even worse time than I had originally thought. I went to present my paper: the location was one of the enormous ballrooms in the Chicago Hilton. It had 30-ft ceilings, chandeliers. There were about 300-400 chairs in there, but it could have easily held 1000 (official capacity listed at 1500, this is the exact room). The area for the presenters was on an elevated platform with microphones, ensuring that all speech echoed about the room. For my paper there were 9 people scattered among the hundreds of chairs, and one of them was my husband.

So, I'm pretty glad I didn't put too much effort into the paper since it would have been a waste of time. Very surreal experience. But hey, presenting gets my trip paid for by the University, so I can't complain that much.

Conference

You may have noticed how much my husband has been freaking about his paper presentation on Saturday. My paper, on the other hand, is tomorrow. I don't actually have a paper, though, just a list of notes. Luckily, I have lots of practice presenting non-written papers. Many times I have woken up really early (last time in Manchester), gone to buy a little pair of paper scissors** and Scotch tape, cut something up, made a collage of words filled in with handwritten, double triple layer coated with tape, and done that.

With this Manchester paper I managed to really impress a Swiss woman (who happened to be the chair of the panel and therefore in charge of it). How does one really impress a Swiss woman, you ask? Present in a panel where everyone else goes over the time limit, and have your paper be exactly the right amount of minutes. Exactly. The Swiss woman will love you for life.

I really just don't care anymore. My paper is at one of the worst possible times of the conference, in the wrong panel, so who cares.

Wouldn't you hire me?

**I am such a bad speller that I couldn't even spell "scissors" well enough that the spell check would suggest what I wanted (sucrose? it asks, trying to be helpful). I had to look up the Italian word "forbici" in the Italian English dictionary to find the way to spell scissors in English. Wouldn't you hire me?

Chicago

I am going tomorrow to Chicago for the conference, and I won't be back until next week. While I am away, it may be a good time to peruse the new 100 things about me post from yesterday. Give me some suggestions for #63!

Museum that if you knew me well you would know that I was exceedingly enthusiastic to have had the chance to go there link of the week: Kimchi Museum, Seoul, South Korea

100 Things About Me

1. I am an only child.
2. I had a fish tank when I was young, but then I saw some of the fish eat their own babies. I have never had a fish tank since then.
3. I once did a science fair project where I electrocuted plants. They died.
4. I love to garden! I haven't electrocuted any plants since then! I promise!
5. I really do floss every single day.
6. I am not in the least bit athletic. I was the "classic nerdy girl" picked last for every team in PE class.
7. Except that I don't wear glasses.
7a (bonus!). Or except when my best friend was team captain. She would pick me no matter what.
7b (New! Double bonus!). Except now I probably do need glasses. I need to go to the eye doctor.
8. I hate square pizza. Pizza should be round!
9. I have been happily married for almost 4 years. [Update: over 4 years!]
10. I was the only girl in my high school auto mechanics class.
11. I have 4 tattoos. I got the first one right after my 18th birthday and the fourth one about 2 years ago.
12. Ally McBeal was my favorite TV show, but then it went away :(
13. I have been to 47 of the 50 states. I am still missing Idaho, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
14. I am addicted to caffeine.
15. I have studied many foreign languages (Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, and Italian), but Italian is the only one I speak well.
16. I am not a morning person.
17. Leno or Letterman? Letterman
18. I am a terrible speller. I am thankful for spell-check.
19. I love hot peppers! The hotter the better! [except New Mexico Green Chile is the absolute best pepper, from hot to mild, give me more]
20. My mother's sister's husband's brother invented the Klingon language.
21. One time in a grocery store I found a sack full of cash on the ground. I turned it in to the manager.
22. The Land of the Lost was my favorite TV show (a long time ago). But then it went away :(
23. I have never been stung by a bee.
24. I learned to drive on my dad's hand-me-down 1979 Caprice classic with the big 350 V8 engine. That was the best car ever.
25. Even though I would drive really fast in the Caprice, the only time I ever got a speeding ticket was in a GEO METRO with 3 cylinders. Driving from NM to RI with my husband, I was on the freeway in the middle of nowhere in Tennessee. Semi trucks were passing me! The Geo literally can't go over 85 mph, and even at that speed it feels like it will shake apart. I got stopped for going 5 miles over the limit, and the ticket was $125. Revenue-generating scam, anyone?
26. I believe in Feng Shui, at least some of the time.
27. I once quit a job I hated by leaving a message on their answering machine and never coming back.
28. I love the ocean.
29. Clam chowder** is one of my favorite foods, but
[**And the Rhode Island version too: Quahog chowder.]
30. I also miss New Mexican food.
31. I am usually on time for everything (except sometimes really early in the morning - see # 16). Even when I try to be late, I usually fail and show up on time anyway.
32. I hate messy food. I hate having food on my face.
33. I hate to eat standing up.
34. I spent time as a high school exchange student in Japan.
35. I have never broken a bone.
36. I have dyed my hair many colors at some point: black, platinum blonde, "Scully" red, blonde with black tips, brown, green streaks. But never pink or blue.
37. My current hair color would be best described as "the color that grows out of my head" with a few highlights/lighter areas.
38. My mom and I once got in a fight at the motor vehicle department over my eye color (there was a box to check for the driver's license). I said green and she said blue.
39. I still say green. So does my driver's license.
40. My college creative writing class was taught by Pulitzer-Prize winning author Jhumpa Lahiri back when she was "just a graduate student." (Check out her new book)
41. I can type about 60-65 words per minute.
42. I will be 34 in October. I am 29 and my birthday is in June. [this was the fake one]
43. I [still] have the normal number of fingers and toes.
44. I have trouble sleeping when it is noisy (ie loud loud music in apartment below, Noisy Saab Bitch driving around, sirens, fireworks, construction work next door, people yelling outside).
45. If I had been a boy, I would have been named "John" [though it may have been "Jon" I'm not sure]
46. I hate mayonnaise!
47. I love subways! Underground public transit fascinates me! [*****see expanded post below]
48. I like going up towers. I have been up towers in Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, Seoul, Montreal, various small ones in Italian cities and towns (but not Pisa), and maybe some others I forget. I want to go up the one in Toronto.
49. I grate fresh Parmigiano Reggiano cheese to go on my pasta at home. I am a cheese snob. The green Kraft Parmesan tube makes me cringe.
50. I had braces, but then I got in a car accident, whacked my head, and my teeth were knocked slightly crooked again. Oh well.
51. I have terrible handwriting. [see yesterday's post]
52. I am right-handed.
53. My fingernails grow really fast.
54. Making it hard to type sometimes.
55. Yet still, I'd rather type than handwrite - more legible, faster.
56. I lived for about a month and a half in Seoul, (South) Korea.
57. I once ate a Capybara (the biggest type of rodent) in Paraguay. It was in a stew. Not bad - a little bit stringy.
58. I once ate a bag of about 15 chapulines (roasted grasshoppers) in Oaxaca, Mexico (where they are a popular snack) just pretty much to prove that I could. Later that day I became very very ill.
59. It turns out that I am allergic to grasshoppers. Or, rather, arthropod exoskeletons. Soft shelled crabs had always made me vomit (the two times I tried it), but regular crab (without shell) is fine. It never occurred to me that I would be allergic to bugs (with shells). If not for #58, I probably wouldn't have ever known.
60. When I was 2, I stuck a dry corn kernel up my nose, and then I didn't tell anyone what was wrong. I went to bed that night, got up, went to preschool the next day: all with corn up my nose. Later I sneezed, it partially emerged, and my mom pulled it out. So maybe that's when this corn thing first started!
61. In some aspects of my life I am a terrible disorganized slob. My office, for example, is like an explosion of books and papers.
62. In some other aspects of my life, I am actually quite organized. I am very good about backing up my computer data regularly and labeling resulting disks, CDs, etc. very thoroughly.
63. [Your turn! Tell me something about me!]
64. When I am very stressed out, I get hyperactive.
65. Otherwise, I am actually quite lazy a lot of the time.
66. I never liked math class in school, but I am actually not bad at it.
67. My dad is a physicist. He is pretty much retired from his job, but he will always be a physicist.
68. I think my dad is still a bit disappointed that I didn't become a physicist too.
69. My mom teaches a special education class at an elementary school in a very poor section of Albuquerque.
70. She is quite thankful that I didn't decide to become an elementary school teacher since she is pretty burned out on it all. She gets to retire in 2 years.
71. My parents are divorced, and I'm glad because they didn't have anything in common and didn't even really like each other.
72. It's no fun to grow up with parents who don't like each other.
73. Have I mentioned that I love the Citgo Sign in Boston? Yes? Yes?
74. I'm a klutz. Did the time when I fell out of the shower clue you in to this already?
75. I hate the telephone.
76. I have lots and lots of houseplants - succulents & cacti, bromeliads, carnivorous plants, herbs, boring plants, topiary - you name it.
77. I think Albuquerque has the perfect climate. I don't like humidity.
78. God I really miss that Caprice from #24. I want it back. It's in Iowa. Don't ask.
79. My mom gets perverse pleasure out of telling me how my old Caprice is rusting away in Iowa.
80. I look like my mom, but my personality is much more like my dad.
81. Except he is smarter and I have better social skills.
82. Both of my parents are extremely stubborn, and so am I.
83. I am not big on holidays - I hate occasions of huge fuss.
84. Perhaps this is why I didn't want a big wedding.
85. I'm so glad I didn't have a big wedding. I will never regret that.
86. I didn't go to my high school prom. Nobody asked me.
87. I have come to the conclusion that high school boys don't like nerdy girls.
88. Have I mentioned that I was a nerdy girl back then? And I still am. Good thing I am no longer interested in high school boys.
89. I don't eat meat, except I do eat fish and seafood. And sometimes I mess up or cheat and eat meat. I'm trying to do better.
90. Lilacs are my favorite flower.
91. When put together, my first and last names are 16 letters total. And it is typed all with the left hand.
92. For a long time, I have wanted a Volvo P1800.
93. I really want an iPod.
94. I lived in Italy twice, for a total of a year and a half.
95. I am addicted to the free giveaway promotions they have at the department store cosmetics counters. I have a zillion little sample sizes of things.
96. I have a pretty good memory.
97. I took piano lessons for about 6 years because my parents made me. I hated it.
98. I am nosy.
99. Sometimes I am really lazy. Oh, wait, did I already say that?
100. I am really quite boring most of the time.
101. Sometimes I overdo it.

*****Just in case all of this didn't convince you that I am a bit strange, please note following on subway fascination: I also like the maps.

Interesting Quiz Results

Taking this quiz, I couldn't decide between two choices on the last question (something like: How do you wear your makeup? Yeah, it's a chick quiz). So I thought I'd try it with both answers and see if they come out the same. No, they don't. Interestingly enough, while neither of these is particularly accurate, I think combining elements of these two (very different) results is actually about right for me. Maybe it has something to do with being born on the Cancer/Gemini cusp. [Sometimes I believe these things. Sometimes I don't.]

The Handwritten Blog?

A while ago, Xolo mentioned that he reminisces about the day of the handwritten letter. Which made me wonder about a handwritten blog. How would that go?

So then, since I have been quite remiss in my "100 things" lately, I'll do the next mini-installment by hand - as an experiment:

55. Yet still, I'd rather type than handwrite - more legible, faster.

I will have all 100 for you (typed) before I leave for Chicago on Tuesday.

Fires

The wind is blowing so hard the house is shaking, and now we turn on the tv to see that there is a gigantic fire in Pawtucket, RI - the next city over. It is blowing from house to house.

How has the world become so scary lately?

I was supposed to go to Boston today

but I'm still not feeling well and don't want to get sick before Chicago. (Yes I am also going to the conference. Yes, I am also presenting a paper. Yes I am really a graduate student at the same school as X. Yes, I am also writing my dissertation!!! These things are all true.)

Also, the 21 degree after wind chill weather forecast didn't help.

So I didn't.

Secrets and New Designs

Go read Xolo for some revelations and to see his new background. The template itself is still modified from the Crafty Dutch People, but the background is based on a picture his mom took in Mexico - inexpertly manipulated by me: Ms. Smut, Corn. I had less than an hour to do it, and that's all the time I have. If it doesn't work, don't tell me, tell him. If you have 800X600 resolution, I'm sorry but it's not going to look good. I don't have time to fix it. Additionally, I told him I was going to tell secrets, and so he ran off and told first! What can you do? Go read it.

Picture Week Continues!

More Tattoos

This is the fourth tattoo, from a few years ago. It is on the inside of my other ankle. The New Mexico and poisonous themes continue, but this one is the only one not done in NM.

The third tattoo, for which there is no picture, is somewhat larger and on my back. It's a more abstract design.

A Competition of Predators

I wish this picture had come out better. It is a spider lying in wait at the mouth of a carnivorous pitcher plant. Both waiting for the same fly.

And of course

Another old picture.

Burn-it the fall edition

I am finally off to mail my CD's to the owners of the following blogs:

And, of course to she who orchestrated the whole thing: The Neurotic Fishbowl. Thank you! This was lots of fun even though I really didn't have time for it.

It is "Corn Smut Mix" whatever that means. You may notice lots of fruit/vegetable themed songs/artist. And some smut. What does that mean? Hmmmm, I don't know either.

Some songs were flash-in-the pan ultra popular in Europe at some point. 883, on the other hand, is a very popular Italian band that I like a lot.

It is arranged a bit from happy to sad. This, rather than being a meta-commentary on life, is just so individuals can shut it off when they reach their personal tolerance for user-unfriendly/goth.

I do have some slightly odd taste in music. My first concert was Metallica, which I still like, but mainly because they were the only big-name band that would come to Albuquerque at the time. My favorite bands are Bauhaus and subsequent incarnations. Right now I am listening to Frontline Assembly because it calms me down.

Exasperation

I'm sure we have all met or worked with people like this: They are lazy and incompetent, and everyone else ends up scrambling at the last minute to fix the messes they have made or to finish the work they never quite got done.

The person I have in mind did it again, resulting in a very negative impact on my day. The worst part is that many other people around (and people in charge) don't seem to recognize what she does. They seem to think she actually knows what she is doing. I don't get it.

At times like these, my mind turns to thoughts of subtle vengeance. A dish best served cold. Any serving suggestions?

I smell like menthol

Positively geriatric. Yeah, I fooled you by posting cute pictures from long ago. But now I am old, dried up, and have a multitude of menthol-flavored/scented/extract-containing remedies for all of my ails, coughs, sinus troubles, and whatever else I forgot.

Mentolatum. I love that stuff.

Pushbutton finger

Does anyone remember in the Jetsons how George would complain about his "pushbutton finger" pains after a long hard day at work pushing buttons (with his finger)? Wasn't that silly. So, I think I really do have this. God, now I feel old and defective.

Picture Week Part 2: Tattoos

A little while back, Estella agreed to post a picture of her tattoo. As part of picture week, I'll show you some of mine as well.

Tattoo Placement
and
Yes, my dog has a foot fetish!

It's a flower not a starfish

I got this one on my ankle about a week after my 18th birthday. It's actually a flower of a weed that grows everywhere in Albuquerque. I picked one and brought it to the tattoo place. And, oh yeah, it's the flower of a variety of the highly poisonous Deadly Nightshade plant:

What's a nice girl like you doing with so many tattoos of poisonous things on your body?

In keeping with the New Mexico theme, this one is a rattlesnake. Also from when I was 18. It looks like it needs a touch up.

This one is on my foot. If you ever have the desire to get a really really painful tattoo, I suggest you get it on your foot! Seriously, I have 4, and this one hurt the most by far.

Commute Update: Two days down, one to go (this week).

Virtual art exhibit of the week: a case of curiosities. Creepy yet fascinating. I especially like the dormouse, in the Wonderland area (I love Alice in Wonderland and such). Reminds me of some of the more interesting things I cataloged while working at the school museum. Like this type of thing - very interesting - wish they would put more online.

Commuting

If you are not familiar with the Boston area, this will probably not be very interesting.

I went to Boston today for a meeting with someone in the Longwood Medical area. For this I take the commuter rail from Providence and get off at Ruggles, walk through Northeastern, down Huntington, and to my destination. The commuter rail does go to Providence, but only at limited times. Every Friday, I go to South Station and then take the T to Cambridge, which takes an hour and a half or more total.

The Bonanza bus also goes from Providence to South Station, but when traffic is heavy this is not a good choice. It costs a little more than the commuter rail. It is a good choice for off-peak hours when the trains aren't running to Providence.

I have also driven to a few things, but this is too unpleasant for frequent use. Honestly, driving in Boston scares the hell out of me. I always get lost. I am willing to bet that it is in the top-3 most confusing US cities to drive in, if not #1. Actually, with the 10+ year-and-counting Big Dig project, I will say #1. Anyone disagree?

Mala said her father has done this commute for 38 years! I am thoroughly impressed.

Anyway, I went today, and the person I met with invited me to come to a talk he is doing tomorrow at 10:15 at Longwood. I really really really don't want to go to Boston again tomorrow, because I have to go Friday to Cambridge, and this will be 3 days in a row. Plus I will have to rush right back to Providence for appointments here in the afternoon. But I think I have to go.

I will be tired.

Stress

I have too much stress.

Random Musings from my Addled Brain [pt 1?]

On the Screen: Manor House on PBS. Fascinating. One of the few very few television shows my dad actually likes, which is actually quite impressive.

Providence: This will most likely be my last year in Providence. There were a few things that I really wanted to do before I left, which I have!:
Any other things not to be missed? I'm taking suggestions. I have always wanted to try the local snail salad, but I don't want a whole plate of it.

On commuting: It takes one and a half to two hours each way to and from Boston. I do this once a week, maybe twice. How do people do it every day? It would kill me.

Busy, busy, busy; headache; stress; nightmares; etc.

I have been staring at the computer screen all day, and my eyes are crossed-bleary-weary. I have a headache sneaking around the edges of my brain.

I am doing all of these online applications for Masters of Public Health programs. I am finishing my PhD this spring, and after getting some pretty reliable information that I have a much better chance of getting the postdoc I really really want in fall 2005 rather than 2004, I have decided to apply for 1) 1-yr post-PhD MPH programs and 2) other postdocs (just in case). I really really want that one postdoc, though, so if I do a 1-yr MPH then I am set to apply for 2005.

In between doing these online applications, I have been reading archives of my favorite blogs (from the time before I discovered them). This is actually a great way to take a break without moving, but it adds to my eye strain and bleary-brain.

I have to go to Boston 2 times this week, which is exhausting. Tomorrow and the usual Friday.

I woke up screaming last night, according to my husband. I don't remember it, but this actually happens to me sometimes. It is an indication of lots of stress.

That's all. Ta-ta.

Slippery When Wet

Sometimes my houseplants get some little mites. Since I don't want to use poison in the house, I spray them with a soap/water mixture to keep the bugs at bay. I generally spray the plant in the bathtub in order to avoid a big mess.

I was spraying an ivy plant today, and this evening I went to have a shower. The spray must have made the tub very slippery, because in the middle of the shower I started to feel myself slipping. I tried to grab the knob, but it is not a good handle, so I just kept slipping.

Whump! I fell on my butt outside of the shower on the bathmat. My feet were still hanging over the side of the tub, and I could feel the shower on them. The shower curtain was tangled up around my head, and there was water spraying everywhere.

Having heard the whump, my husband rushed in saying, "are you OK?"
"Help! help!" I said.
So he untangled the shower curtain from my head. I got up and immediately started laughing. Realizing that I must be OK, he started laughing too. "I fell out of the shower!"

As I finished my shower, I was thinking about how I really need to write about this in my blog. Thank you blog for making stupid embarassing moments good for something!

I didn't try the links because they are bound to be trash. I suggest you don't try them either. But if you do - 1. Don't blame me for what you get! I warned you! 2. Tell us in the comments what you find.

Not meaning to brag or anything, but:

I have the most wonderful husband in the whole world!

It was our 4 year anniversary on Thursday, but we decided not to go out because I wake up very early to go to Boston on Fridays. We thought it would make more sense to have a quiet evening at home and go out over the weekend.

When I got home from class Thursday PM, I noticed that the lights had been dimmed. The table was nicely set with candles and wine glasses, and there was a huge vase of roses. There was a bottle of champagne on ice. My husband had made me a fancy dinner for our anniversary! To be perfectly honest, I knew something was up because I had talked about not feeling like going to class, and he kept insisting you have to go to class today!

We started with a home-made pizza, dough made from scratch and baked on the pizza stone, with barbecue-style sauce, smoked Gouda cheese, sundried tomatoes, and roasted peppers. He had tried to bake it in the form of a heart, which didn't exactly work, but it was very sweet of him to try :) Next, an array of all kinds of fruit, cheeses (Camembert, Jarlsberg, Parmigiano, Appenzeller - from Switzerland - one of my favorites), honey, walnuts, fig and ginger jam, crackers, bread and softened butter. Very good. For dessert, a rich dark chocolate truffle cake.

This was much better than going out.
